About French Farm Winery

French Farm Winery opened in 1991 as a Vineyard and Winery. Within two years the Main building was converted into a restaurant and the winemaking facilities were moved to a new building at the back of the property known as the Barrel room.

In 2008 the Vineyard and all the winemaking equipment was sold. The Vineyard now operates as French Peak Wines just 100m down the road.

In 2010 a mezzanine floor was built in the barrel room and four French inspired studio units were built.

In 2013 the restaurant finally closed and the site was used only as a wedding venue. The last wedding was held in March 2016 when the venue closed for earthquake strengthening. The buildings are now strengthened to 70% of NBS.

Current Custodians – Warwick & Heather

In September of 2016 we were looking for a new challenge after living in Queenstown for 7 years.

Originally from Auckland we did not want to leave the South Island and after much research decided to visit French Farm Winery.

Never having heard of the property we fell in love with it immediately even though it was obvious that a huge amount of work and expense would be needed to bring it up to scratch.

We purchased French Farm Winery in February 2017 and stayed closed during all of that year doing renovations. We built a covered walkway to connect the accommodation to the main building, upgraded a lovely courtyard area with plants, seating, fountain and BBQ, installed a hot spa in the bush, fenced all the unsightly plants and generally gave the whole property a good clean up.

The unloved main building was cleaned completely and Heather used her interior design skills to convert the inside to a beautiful lounge and dining room. Everything was completed by the construction of a fantastic atrium area which allows all year round dining.

We have put to good use our extensive life skills and continue to learn the intricacies of the hospitality industry.

With accommodation, bistro, weddings and special occasions we are kept very busy.

We love the area and the locals and enjoy bringing French Farm Winery back to life.
